What you focus on expands

written by Erica Quam

Every day when you wake up and take in a new breath of air, you have two choices. You can focus on the negative or the positive.  Sure, it's tempting to think about how tired you feel, how little sleep you got, or something that you are NOT looking forward to in your day.

Before you go there, remember: what you focus on expands.  If you focus on the negative, it leads into a downward spiral. When you focus on the positive, it leads to an updraft.  The positive pulls you forward, onward, & upward - no matter what challenges are before you.

When you CHOOSE to focus on the positive, you literally shift your paradigm from struggle to strength. You may even begin to notice what an amazing life you have.

Start small.

To focus on the positive, begin each day with gratitude.  What are you grateful for?  The coffee pot that you set last night that is already sending the aroma throughout the house.  The hot shower with wonderful water pressure that invigorates & awakens you.

It's easy to take the simple things for granted.  The very act of acknowledging these things will change what you think about your life.  Instead of dwelling on what you lack, experience the energy of abundance.

The next step.

Last week, we talked about writing a gratitude list each day. There is power in thinking about gratitude & what you are grateful for in your life. The power increases when you write it down - put pen to paper and write the words.  Words are powerful. The power expands again if you take the next step and share your gratitude with someone else. Even a simple, thank you, will do.

From struggle to strength

This week, continue the practice of writing a gratitude list each day. Next, begin to notice how you respond to challenges, obstacles, and difficulties that you face. Instead of getting stalled, stuck, disappointed, or disheartened, see if you bring your awareness to what these situations might teach you. Find even a tiny piece of light out of each event.  When you focus on that piece of light - it will expand.

Can you think of a situation in your life that at first appeared at first to be negative and now looking back you realize it actually pointed you in the right direction?  Share it in the comments below.
