How's your mindset?
- Do you ever doubt yourself or actions you've taken?
- Do you question decisions you've made or replay conversations you've had?
- Do fears come up of things that MAY happen or that keep you stuck - to take no action?
Your skills, talent, and knowledge can be sabotaged...when your mindset isn't there.
I have these occasions when 'the gremlins' start to hold a convention in my head. The voices - those doubts, fears, & negative thoughts - come up and begin to take over.
Mindset is something to work on every single day. To keep your mindset positive takes practice. The more you are aware of your mindset, the better equipped you will be to improve it.
Here are three simple strategies to consider:
1. Change the questions.
My first clue to take a step back are the 'why' questions. They are not helpful!
- Why isn't this working?
- Why do I have to work so hard?
- Why does it always have to be such a struggle?
Change the questions you are asking. Go from being the victim to being empowered - simply by changing words.
- How can I look at this differently?
- How can I change the way I am approaching this to be more effective?
- What is this situation teaching me and how can I view it differently?
2. Respond back.
One of the quickest ways to shut the voices down is to stand up to them. Talk back to them. That's right...maybe you have to choose when and where you do this...that's fine. Pretend you are on an important phone call - people won't even notice you're talking to yourself.
Or write the dialogue down to get it out of your head. Write it and read it. What are you constantly saying to yourself? Imagine if you spoke to someone like you speak to yourself. This may be the step you need to create an important shift.
3. Change your environment.
Do you have a thinking room, a chair or bench, or simply a place where you go to get grounded?
For me, I like to go to the water to get back into a better 'head space'. It calms me and grounds me. I feel my feet underneath me, I feel the breeze on my face, and I look out at the vastness across the bay. This almost always brings me back.
Maybe you can't actually get to the place that you want to go...and you can imagine it in your head. Find a picture - keep it on your phone - like a touchstone to come back to.
Sometimes changing your physical environment - going for a walk, getting some fresh air, or even imagining yourself in a different place - can help snap you out of that negative pattern of thoughts.
What do you do when you are there? Think of something you are grateful for, take a few deep breaths, or simply allow yourself to notice things around you. This gets you out of your head and connected back to your heart, your soul, your spirit.
