Good coaches are also good managers. They have the ability to connect with people, build relationships, embrace conflict, and be engaged.
Coaching is 90% how you relate to people. Good coaches are self aware and invest in themselves for their own personal growth. They surround themselves with people who are positive, supportive, & who lift them up.
Being an expert in sport is further down on the list of what is really important. There are plenty of coaches who “hide” behind the X’s and the O’s because they don’t want to deal with the other “stuff”. I believe that all that other “stuff” is what makes a coach great!
So coaches, to go from good to great:
1. Put time and energy into yourself.
For you to be a better coach, you have to be a better you. Connect with your purpose each day. Do things that inspire you so that you can be engaged and inspire others. Find people who can support you to be at your best - in all areas of your life. Maybe you need more people in your life to make you laugh, take yourself less seriously, and help you see that glass as half full.
2. Engage in activities that will help you gain self awareness.
If you have lots of challenging athletes or people you are constantly struggling to deal with, work on gaining more self awareness. You can work with a coach and also get feedback from others. Communication is a skill. Learn different ways to relate to people and how to adapt your behavior for success. I believe that there are people who show up in our lives to teach us certain things. If we don’t learn a lesson the first time, we’ll be presented with these same “types” of people over and over again until we do.
3. When conflict comes up, welcome it.
Constructive conflict is something that helps teams become more committed. Address conflict directly and constructively instead of ignoring it and letting it fester. Get to the origin of the conflict - is it a problem with team structure or dynamics, or is it at a more personal level? Look at conflict as a path towards growth. The best coaches handle adversity and teach their teams how to grow stronger - because of it.
