Get Grounded When You're Out Of Your Comfort Zone

There were several activities that took me out of my comfort zone in my role as a head coach: networking, recruiting, and speaking. You may find it hard to believe that a head coach of a Pac-12 program could be such an introvert. The two don't seem to fit together. Yet...there I was.

To say I had a bad-attitude at times was an understatement.

I made up stories about what people thought of me. I would compare myself to other coaches. I had a stream of negative thoughts swirling around in my head.

3 Steps To A More Successful Outcome For Anything You Do

written by Erica Quam

I was talking to a coach this week who shared one of her accomplishments.

(Coaches begin our calls by telling me what went well, what they’re proud of, and things they’ve accomplished since the last time we spoke).

This coach shared, “My accomplishment was...I actually set an intention.”

Alright! Cool!” I replied.

What did setting an intention look like for you? What did you do?”, I asked.

THE EVENT

The coach described what happened.

She had been avoiding a difficult conversation with her head coach. There were issues that she didn’t know how to address so she kept putting it off. Over time, emotions continued to build. Now, almost anything he said triggered her…even if it was an innocent comment.

What's Your Word-of-the-Year?

I love the new year. There's something exhilarating about a fresh start, a clean slate, and a chance to begin again.

In the sport of swimming, teams are often training over the New Year's holiday. We had a lot of international athletes on our team. We had a new year's count down for the different time zones across the world and even learned how to say "Happy New Year" in lots of different languages.

I wanted to take time to celebrate this new beginning with the team - and tap into this powerful energy. Since we were already training hard and the team was pretty tired, I didn't want to add another serious "goal" to their plate..like coming up with a bunch of resolutions. I wanted to do something more fun...more powerful...more meaningful. That's when we started our annual tradition of choosing a word of the year.

the one thing coaches can do to succeed at just about anything

the reporter

The coach described what happened. “A reporter had called me up and left a voicemail. He was writing a feature story on me and wanted to set up an interview. I just got really nervous. I hate doing interviews. I never knew what they’re gonna ask, I never feel prepared, and most of the time I get misquoted or even worse - things just taken out of context.”

Okay,” I said...”then what?

What does intention have to do with coaches?

I was talking to a coach this week who shared one of her accomplishments with me. She set an intention. Not only did she set an intention...she experienced amazing results - from this one simple step.

The Reporter

A reporter had called her and left a voicemail. He was writing a feature story on her and wanted to find time to set up an interview. The coach got really nervous. She hated doing interviews. She never knew what they were going to ask, she never felt prepared, and most of the time she was misquoted or even worse - her quotes were taken out of context.

The Procrastination

She stayed up late that night worrying about what questions this guy would ask. The next morning, instead of calling him back, she put it off and worried some more. Eventually, with her stomach in knots, she picked up the phone and began to dial. As the phone rang something popped into her head. She remembered something we had talked about during one of our coaching calls. Before anyone answered she quickly hung up the phone.
