What to do when you feel burned out...and want to quit

It was spring - during my 5th year as an assistant collegiate swim coach. I was done. I had already made a new plan. I was moving to Alaska. 

I would work at Starbucks or REI. I wanted to do something easy. Maybe I would pick up some substitute teaching hours along the way.

My friend had offered me a place to live for free while she traveled out of the country for the next six months.

Do You Need A Permission Slip?

I just finished an online course with Brené Brown, the bestselling author of The Gifts of Imperfection.  It has been so much fun and I have learned a lot about myself.

One of my favorite exercises involves writing your own permission slips.  I think this is such a powerful practice!  How many times do you feel guilty for something you do? How many times do you feel shy or embarrassed?  A quick way to create a drastic shift is to actually give yourself permission to do something, not do something, or try something new.

The reality is, the more that we take care of ourselves, the better we will be able to take care of others.

When we are overwhelmed, overworked, and overtired we are not being true to ourselves.  We are not able to be authentic.  When we cannot show up as the best version of our selves, we are actually doing a disservice to others.  And, if our passion and our purpose is to help others - then we have to help ourselves first.

Brené Brown talks about a story after she met Oprah Winfrey and was about to go on her show.  She was really nervous and feeling out of control.  She wrote herself a permission slip to be goofy, uncool, & super excited.  She put her note in her pocket and let the universe do the rest.  She ended up allowing herself to just have fun - and that's exactly how she showed up.

What can you give yourself permission to do?  Try it.  Here are some ideas:

Permission to learn something new.
Permission to take a nap.
Permission to have fun.  
Permission to take a vacation.
Permission to leave work at work.
Permission to do nothing.
Permission to go on a date with yourself.
Permission to say no to something you don't want to do.


Give yourself permission to do something new, different, or even a little scary.  Give yourself permission to take time or make time for yourself - when you don't believe more time exists.
